How to Craft a Chestplate in Minecraft
To craft a chestplate in Minecraft you need eight leather. On the Crafting Table fill every square except the top-middle; that gap is the neck. Below are the items, the recipe, and where that leather comes from.

Eight leather from cows
Cows in plains and the rest of the Overworld drop leather when they die. Horses, llamas and hoglins drop it too. Eight pieces cover one tunic.
A hole in the top middle
Open a Crafting Table. Put leather in the top-left and top-right, then fill the whole middle row and the whole bottom row. Leave the top-middle empty. One leather chestplate appears on the right; take it. The inventory 2×2 cannot hold this shape.
On the chest slot
Open the inventory and drop it into the chest armor slot, the square on the torso. Hits land on the tunic first. The same eight-slot shape with iron ingots instead of leather makes the next plate.
