How to Craft a Boat in Minecraft
To craft a boat in Minecraft you need five wooden planks of the same wood. On the Crafting Table they make a U: three along the bottom and one on each side, with the middle empty. Oak is the usual first boat. Below are the items, the recipe, and where the planks come from.

How to craft these materials
Wooden Planks
Oak LogWooden Planks ×4Shapeless: the slots can sit anywhere on the grid.
Five oak planks
Punch or axe two oak logs and convert them in the inventory 2×2: each log is four planks, so two logs already cover the five you need. Keep all five the same wood; oak is what you get from the first tree in most worlds.
A U in the grid
Open the Crafting Table. Fill the whole bottom row with planks, then put one plank in the middle-left square and one in the middle-right. Leave the top row and the exact center empty. One oak boat appears on the right; take it.
Place it on water
Aim at a water block and use the boat to set it down, then use the boat again to climb in. Forward, back, left and right steer it. Sneak to get out. Two players or a player and a mob can sit in the same boat.
