A log from any tree

Punch or axe an oak — birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove and cherry work the same. One log is one charcoal. A stripped log or a wood block smelts the same way.

Log in the furnace

Open a furnace. Log in the top slot, fuel underneath — two sticks cover one smelt, or a plank. When the arrow fills, one charcoal sits on the right; take it. That piece then smelts eight more logs.

Torches and eight smelts

Put the charcoal on a stick on the Crafting Table for four torches. As furnace fuel it lasts eighty seconds, eight items. Break a campfire by hand and two charcoal drop.
