Wet sponge from the monument

Swim a deep ocean until a prismarine temple shows on the map. Break the wet sponges in the sponge rooms — a hoe is fastest, any tool works — and kill the elder guardian: it always drops one more. One wet sponge is one dry sponge.

Wet sponge in the furnace

Open a furnace. Wet sponge in the top slot, fuel underneath — two sticks cover one smelt, or a plank. When the arrow fills, one sponge sits on the right; take it. An empty bucket in the fuel slot fills with water as the sponge dries.

Soak, then dry again

Place the sponge against water. It drinks the water it touches and turns wet. Break it, furnace again, place again. In the Nether, just put the wet sponge on the ground and it dries in a puff of steam.
