Five gunpowder
Kill creepers at night or in caves: each one drops 0–2 gunpowder. Ghasts in the Nether and witches drop it too. You need five for one TNT. A wandering trader sometimes sells four for an emerald if the night went quiet.
Four sand
Take a shovel to a desert or a beach and dig four sand blocks. Red sand from a badlands works the same, and you can mix the two in one craft. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this recipe; open a Crafting Table.
Corners and center
Put gunpowder in all four corners and in the middle square. Fill the four remaining squares — the middle of each side — with sand. One TNT appears on the right; take it. Place the block, light it with flint and steel, and step back: the fuse runs four seconds.
