How to Craft a Trapdoor in Minecraft
To craft a trapdoor in Minecraft you need six wooden planks of the same wood. On the Crafting Table fill two full rows of three — oak is the usual first hatch — and you get two trapdoors. Below are the items, the recipe, and where the planks come from.

How to craft these materials
Wooden Planks

Six oak planks
Punch or axe an oak log and convert it in the inventory 2×2: one log is four planks. You need six, so break a second log. Keep the six planks the same wood; oak is what you get from the first tree in most worlds.
Two rows of three
Open the Crafting Table. Fill the top row and the middle row with planks, and leave the bottom empty. Two oak trapdoors appear on the right; take both. You can slide those two full rows down so the bottom of the grid is packed instead.
Hatch on a block
Aim at the top or bottom of a solid block and place it. Use it to open and close. On the upper half it sits on top and swings down; on the lower half it sits underneath and swings up. Stand under a closed hatch one block up, close it, and you crawl through the gap.
