Six wool, one stick
Shear an adult sheep for one to three wool, or kill one for a single block. You need six of the same color — white sheep are the usual first flock. Two planks stacked in the inventory 2×2 make four sticks; you only take one for this craft.
Wool up top, stick below
Open the Crafting Table. Fill the top row and the middle row with wool. Put the stick in the bottom-middle square and leave the two bottom corners empty. One banner appears on the right; take it. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this shape.
Plant it or hang it
Place the banner on top of a block like a post, or on the side of a wall. It stands two blocks tall and occupies the block you clicked. Break it with your hand or an axe to pick it back up; banners stack to sixteen.
