How to craft these materials
Pumpkin, shears, torch
Orange pumpkin patches sit on grass in plains and taiga. Break one with any tool; an axe is faster. Craft shears from two iron ingots on a diagonal. One coal on a stick in the inventory 2×2 dumps four torches; this craft uses one.
Face first, then the stack
Put the pumpkin on the ground. Use the shears on the side you want the face. Break the carved pumpkin and pick it up. Open the inventory: carved pumpkin in a square, torch directly under it. One jack o'Lantern appears on the right. The same pair works on a Crafting Table.
Light that stays underwater
Place it and the face turns toward you. It puts out light 15 and keeps that light under water, so a lake floor stays readable. Taiga village pumpkin piles already hold a few if you would rather loot than shear.
