How to Craft a Shelf in Minecraft
To craft shelves in Minecraft you need six matching stripped logs. On the Crafting Table fill the top row and the bottom row and leave the middle empty, and six shelves come out. Below are the items, the recipe, and where those logs come from.

Six matching stripped logs
Place an oak log, then use an axe on it until the bark comes off. Mine the stripped log and repeat until you have six of the same wood. Mixing oak with spruce returns nothing. Axe on a log in the world is the step; the Crafting Table does not strip bark.
Top and bottom rows
Open the Crafting Table. Three stripped oak logs across the top, three across the bottom, middle row empty. Six oak shelves appear on the right; take them. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this 3×3.
Three items on the wall
Place a shelf on the side of a solid block. Use it to park up to three stacks on the front, the way an item frame holds one. Use an empty hand on a filled slot to take that stack back. An axe breaks the shelf. They stack to sixty-four.
