How to Craft a Daylight Detector in Minecraft
To craft a daylight detector in Minecraft you need three glass, three nether quartz, and three wooden slabs. On the Crafting Table put glass across the top, quartz in the middle, and slabs along the bottom, and one detector comes out. Below are the items, the recipe, and where those pieces come from.

Smelt sand in a furnace for three glass. Mine nether quartz ore in the Nether with any pickaxe; three quartz fill the middle row. Three matching planks in a row on the table make six wooden slabs; keep three. Oak slabs work if that is the wood you already have.

Open the Crafting Table. Top row: three glass. Middle: three nether quartz. Bottom: three wooden slabs. One daylight detector appears on the right; take it. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this 3×3.
Sky light as a pulse
Place it under open sky. The output climbs with daylight, from nothing at night to a full fifteen at noon. Use it once to invert the reading so night sends the pulse instead. A comparator can read that level into a line. An axe breaks the detector.
