How to Craft a Comparator in Minecraft
To craft a comparator in Minecraft you need three redstone torches, one nether quartz, and three stone. On the Crafting Table put a torch over the quartz, a torch on each side, and three stone along the bottom, and one comparator comes out. Craft each redstone torch from one redstone dust on top of a stick in the inventory 2×2; you need three. Mine nether quartz ore in the Nether with any pickaxe. Smelt cobblestone in a furnace for the three stone along the bottom.

Open the Crafting Table. Top row: empty, torch, empty. Middle: torch, nether quartz, torch. Bottom: three stone. One comparator appears on the right; take it. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this 3×3.
Read from the back
Place it so the single torch at the back faces the container you want to measure, a chest or a note block. Use the comparator to flip between compare and subtract. A repeater only delays the pulse; this one reads how full the block behind it is. Stone pickaxe breaks it.
