Break the top segments
Walk a riverbank, a beach, a swamp, or a desert shore until the tall green stalks sit against water. Break the top pieces and leave the bottom on dirt, sand, or grass; it grows back if water still touches the side of that block. Plant extras the same way.
One cane in any square
Open the inventory. Put one sugar cane in any of the four squares. One sugar appears on the right; take it. A Crafting Table accepts that same single cane. A honey bottle in that grid makes three sugar and leaves the empty bottle.
Two sugar for a cake
Two sugar go into a cake with milk, egg, and wheat. One sugar goes in with pumpkin and egg for pumpkin pie. Three cane in a row on the table make paper if you still have stalks left.
