How to Craft a Sword in Minecraft
To craft a sword in Minecraft you need two wooden planks and one stick. On the Crafting Table put the two planks in a column in the middle and the stick under them. Below are the items, the recipe, and where those pieces come from.

Wooden Planks

Two planks, one stick
Punch a log and convert it in the inventory 2×2: one log is four planks. Two go on the blade. The other two stacked make four sticks; take one for the handle. That covers the whole wooden sword.
A blade down the middle
Open the Crafting Table. Drop a plank in the top-middle square, another plank in the very center, and the stick in the bottom-middle. One wooden sword appears on the right; take it. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this column.
Hit first, then cobwebs
Equip it and click a mob: that is the first fight. Hold it on a cobweb and the web drops string. Wooden swords do not stack. Swap the two planks for cobblestone on the same column when you want the next blade.
