How to Craft a Lightning Rod in Minecraft
To craft a lightning rod in Minecraft you need three copper ingots. Stack them in a column down the middle of the Crafting Table, and one rod comes out. Below are the items, the recipe, and where that copper comes from.

Three copper ingots
Mine copper ore with a stone pickaxe and smelt the raw copper in a furnace until three ingots come out. A spyglass uses two of those ingots under an amethyst shard; this craft wants a full column of three.
A column down the middle
Open the Crafting Table. Put a copper ingot in the top-middle, the center, and the bottom-middle. Leave the six side squares empty. One lightning rod appears on the right; take it. This column needs the 3×3 table.
Strike here, not the roof
Place it on a roof or a hill. Lightning in range hits the rod instead of the wood around it. The rod also emits a redstone pulse when it is struck. A chain is another metal piece if you want hanging iron nearby. A stone pickaxe breaks the rod.
