How to Craft a Detector Rail in Minecraft
To craft a detector rail in Minecraft you need six iron ingots, one stone pressure plate, and one redstone dust. On the Crafting Table put iron down both sides, the plate in the middle, and redstone under it, and six detector rails come out. Below are the items, the recipe, and where those pieces come from.

Mine iron ore with a stone pickaxe and smelt six ingots in a furnace. Two stone in a row make the stone pressure plate; smelt cobblestone first. Redstone ore wants an iron pickaxe; keep one dust.
Plate in the middle of the iron
Open the Crafting Table. Top: iron, empty, iron. Middle: iron, stone pressure plate, iron. Bottom: iron, redstone, iron. Six detector rails appear on the right; take them. The 2×2 inventory cannot hold this 3×3.
A pulse when a cart rolls over
Place it in a rail line. A minecart on top powers the rail and the block under it. A powered rail still needs redstone to push; this one only reads the cart. A pickaxe picks the detector rail back up.
